WASRA has a very proud and successful history of our athletes making Australian Teams. WASRA members have enjoyed success at various National Championships, Oceania Games, World Cups, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Olympic and Paralympic Games. WASRA congratulates these athletes on their hard work and dedication.

Notable West Australians

Tricia Van Nus was selected for the 1978 World Championships in Seoul – South Korea, where she was a member of Australia’s Bronze Medal winning Women’s Prone team and shooting a personal best of 599 out of a possible 600.

Tricia is a five time winner of the Northern Districts Championships (the sash and bell in this photo above), numerous State and National medals and records, along with many South Pacific Regional Championships team selections and medals (now called Oceania Championships)

Alan Williams was the 1st West Australian Smallbore Rifle Shooter to be selected for a Commonwealth Games team. Alan also competed at the World Championships that year.

A national record holder, and National Championships medallist, Alan also competed in the Oceania Championships in 1995.  He also won many Northern Districts Championships, WASRA State titles and held numerous State records in Prone, 3 Position and Air Rifle.

Following on a family tradition, Robyn Ridley (nee Van Nus) did us proud to be selected to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to become our first Olympian. Robyn was also selected for the London 2012 Olympics. She is the first (and so far only) Australian woman to earn a place in the World Cup Final (now called the Presidents Cup) that was held in Munich in 2010, and was ranked in the top 10 shooters in the World for Women’s 3 Position during 2010.

Adding to this impressive record, Robyn also competed at 3 consecutive Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018. Robyn made the finals in her 3 position match in each of those games with her highest finish of 4th.

Robyn also competed in 2 World Championships, Lahti 2002 and Munich 2010 and has been the Oceania Champion multiple times. She has also held many National and State Records in both the 3 Position and Air Rifle events.

In 2016 Anton Zappelli became our first WA Paralympian, repeating the feat to be selected again in 2020.

Anton is a multiple medal winner at World Cups and World Championships including a silver medal in the Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1 at the 2019 World Championships.

Once a promising golfer, Anton competed in wheelchair road racing throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, before finally finding his true calling in 2011 as a shooter, and he has been an integral member of the Australian Para-Shooting Team ever since that time.

Anton shoots Air Rifle Prone and more recently, 50m Prone – all from the wheelchair.
